There are many golf courses and practice sites in Tsukuba area.  I visited a practice site, Gakuen Golf, and I purchased a ball card.  If you get a 10,000 yen card, you can get 2,000 balls (about 5 yen per a ball). Another cheaper one is the Advance Golf near Sakura Exit of Jo-Ban Express Way(same Advnace Golf with the mini-golf course but different location).  You pay 500 yen for an hour and there no limit on how many balls you can hit.  Probably cheapest in Tsukuba.

Also, I bought a used set of irons and a driver(wood) at a gold shop near the Dayz Town.  The iron set is from Honma(a Japanese brand, including Sand Wedge and Pitching Wedge) and priced at 9,800 yen.  Also I bought a driver from Callaway(Great Big Bertha, 5-6 years old) for 3,000 yen.

Instead of visiting a driving range, where you just hit the ball, you can go to a mini-par 3-course in the outskirt of Tsukuba.  You drive North on Nishi or Higashi O dori and drive onto where the road leads to a T junction.  On the right is the way to Mt. Tsukuba.  You take left and drive on untill you see a driving range on your left. It is one of the golf practice facilities run by Advance Golf in Tsukuba. This is the Club House.

You can hit the balls in the driving range or play on the Par 3 15 hole course.  The price is 1000 yen during weekdays and 2000 yen on weekedns.  I made upto 4 rounds a day but if you start early in summer, you can make 5 rounds, I think.  So, you paly 2 rounds before lunch (they open at 9:00 am) and another 2 rounds after lunch.  This is a picture of rest area near the Hole #1.

Hole #1.  Very short.  All you need are Iron #11, SW, and a Putter.

Yes, just 53 yards. The longest one is 128 yds at #13.

In Japanese standard, it is dirty.  But it is cheap so I don't complain.

Nearby apartment guarded by net.

The Holes srround the driving range.

Right next to the course is a vegetable farm.

Also, if you like to practice at night but don't drive out to a practice site, you can use the university practice site near Physical Education building.  Try to find the university gym.  It is right next to the gym and running tracks.

There are about 14 individual spots.  If you go after 7~8 pm you will be the only one practicing.  There is no time restriction so you can go there after 10:00 pm.  You have to bring you own balls though.
