I am staying at the Department of Agricultural Economics, University of Tsukuba, Japan for a year, starting 2-15-06.  This page is to provide useful information on living in Tsukuba and to remember my stay at Tsukuba. Usual disclaimer applies and therefore I am not responsible for any incorrect  information here and use of it.  Utilize anyway you want it at your own risk.

IMPORTANT :  If you are going to spend a year or so here in Japan and if you are a Korean, you need the following items to bring with you to Japan.

1. Visa (not the temporary ones. It will take months to get one if you apply in Japan)
2. Your Korean driver's license AND a Certificate of Driver's License in English.  And if you want to drive right away, get the international driver's license. Also, make sure the aptitude test period is NOT overdue ON your Korean driver's license.  For example, if the period for you to take the aptitute test is shown as 2003.7.6~2003.8.6 in 2006, you application for Japanese driver's license may be rejected or they might ask you to submit more papers.  You may have to come to Korea to fix the date.  Bottom line is, you want to get a re-issued driver's license to have all the recent information.
3. A seal(stamp) with your name inscribed in CHINESE Character(ùÓí®) for alien registration(you can make one here but why waste it if you already have one?).
4. Electronic dictionary (I have a Sharp but people say Casio is better.  Try to get one with Interpreter function)

*One more thing.  If you buy a used car here in Tsukuba(here is a link for a used-car dealer in Tsukuba), the price range is 200,000~500,000 yen for 7~10 years old sedans. But when you go back and try to sell your car to used car dealers, you will get 0~100,000 yen back. So basically you spend 400,000 yen for a car.  There are two other alternatives. 1) Rent a car. It will cost you about the same but you can get a new car every month.  2) Bring your car back to your country. If you go back to Korea, you can use Pusan-Shimonoseki Ferry (around 30,000 yen for car and 8,000~20,000 yen for people; Japanese site is here). Osaka-Pusan(Panstar Ferry) is too expensive;150,000 yen for one way trip. Korean site is here. All necessary documents and procedures are well described here (look at the bottom of the page and locate the button "ÀÌ»çÈ¹° ÀÚµ¿Â÷ Åë°ü¾È³»". Sorry in Korean only.
